Old People and...driving
So, this has bothered me for quite some time. Atleast since I got on the road behind the wheel (now 2 years). Old people and driving. For the most part, the two do not mix. I repeat, they do not mix. I swear, old people driving is like one of the most frightening things I have ever seen, and something should be done to stop them and their insanely crazy driving.
Now, I know from experience what bad drivers are. I was riding in this car with an old person, and, I swear, he had to be one of the worst drivers on the face of the planet. I would have felt safer driving with somebody who was drunk. He thinks he owns the road. Never puts on signals, can barely hear, probably can barely see, barely pays attention to the road. I was scared for my life. And, repeatedly, he would pull out in front of another car, and just laugh and say, "He's on your side". Crazy.
And, I really truly feel that most old people driving are this way. Their eyesight isn't what it used to be, neither is their hearing, reaction time, and you stick in Alzheimer's along with arthritis, and you've got the recipe for one scary driver. And, they feel like they own the road. Probably because they think, "I've been driving longer than you've been alive, so I make the rules". And then people get hurt. They really truly feel like they own the road. And if they were to get in a wreck, they would totally not take responsibility even if it was bluntly obvious that they were truly the cause of the accident. It'd be like an old person driving off of the road and crashing into a store. That person would get out and blame other things, but will not take responsibility, even if there was not a single car on the road.
So, why are they horrible. Well, health issues, like I have mentioned before. But also, these people started driving like back in the 20s to 40s. Or somewhere around that time. Was there a DMV back then? Probably not. Were there mandatory driver's ed or 5-hours? Nope. So, these people just hopped in a car one day, and started driving. So, now today, they still haven't been to a driving class or taken a test, they just get a license. Yeah, down the road in a few decades, old people drivers will probably be a little better off, seeing as how they were taught how to drive and were officially licensed in driving, along with new advanced technology.
But, now, I feel that they are a threat to the road. And, I think that they are the worst age group of drivers. Well, maybe the stats show that male teenagers are, but that's because they are just showing off, being "manly". If they, or I should say we, wanted to drive well, we'd be some of the best drivers on the road. So, what needs to be done about these dangerous drivers? I think each senior citizen needs to take a test, even if they have a license. And then an eye test, and a reflex test, and such as that. And when all is passed, then they can drive. And like every year or two, they need to go back in and get retested. 'Cause they'll forget, or their eyesight will get worse. Or arthritis will make it almost impossible for them to drive.
And, that's all I have to say about old people and driving. Have a great week, and join me next time for my thoughts on everything.
